    तृतीयक क्षेत्र विकसित और विकासशील दोनों देशों की अर्थव्यवस्थाओं में केंद्रीय भूमिका निभाता है। वे सभी विकसित अर्थव्यवस्थाओं के सकल घरेलू उत्पाद के आधे से अधिक के लिए जिम्मेदार हैं और अधिकांश विकासशील अर्थव्यवस्थाओं में एकल सबसे बड़े क्षेत्र का गठन करते हैं। सेवाओं की वृद्धि के पीछे मुख्य कारणों में तेजी से शहरीकरण, सार्वजनिक क्षेत्र का विस्तार और मध्यवर्ती और अंतिम उपभोक्ता सेवाओं की बढ़ती मांग शामिल है। संपूर्ण अर्थव्यवस्था की उत्पादकता और प्रतिस्पर्धात्मकता के लिए कुशल सेवाओं तक पहुंच महत्वपूर्ण हो गई है।

    सैम से फसलों के स्वास्थ्य, कीट संक्रमण की उपस्थिति और मिट्टी की स्थिति की सक्रिय निगरानी करना भी संभव हो जाता है। इससे प्रारंभिक चरण में संभावित कठिनाइयों की पहचान करना और ऐसी समस्याओं के समाधान को समय पर लागू करना संभव हो जाता है। खतरों के उन्मूलन और बर्बाद होने वाले इनपुट की मात्रा में कमी के माध्यम से, सैम पारिस्थितिक रूप से जिम्मेदार कृषि कार्यों और टिकाऊ कृषि प्रथाओं में योगदान प्रदान करता है।
